Life in Tashigang, a resident once quipped, is best suited for tourists in hunky SUVs: “You may get drunk, blast music, pee anywhere, park everywhere.” For those who live there, however, it is no picnic.
Theirs is a tiny village nestled in the high Himalayas near the India-China border. Its climate is so hostile that its arid lands resemble the lunarscape. Kaza, the town nearest to it in the district of Lahaul & Spiti, is linked with a dirt track. Cellphone network is nonexistent. Fierce winds abound, the cold cutting through one’s skin. A snowfall risks the village being cut off from the world for days. But to the six families staying there, Tashigang is home.
Until last year, the Election Department of Himachal Pradesh was using a primary school in the neighbouring Gette as polling station for the two villages. But heavy snowfall left it in tatters. So they turned to the two-storey Tourist Reception Centre at Tashigang. Public infrastructure is hard to come by in the region. But given the many logistical challenges a setup at the Tourist Reception Centre at Tashigang came with, would it be worth the effort? For just 49 voters?
On a recce earlier this year, officers from the local administration realised an additional aspect about their proposed venue. Tashigang is located at 4,650 metre altitude. If approved, it would be the highest polling station in the world. That was all the motivation they needed.
